JAMAICA PLAIN RESIDENCE - boston, ma

An existing ranch style house from the 1960’s in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood is completed gutted and added onto, and transformed into a minimalist, modern residence. The client’s love for mid-century modern design informed the overall aesthetic.

As an overall concept, due to the one story drop of grade from the front yard to the rear yard, the design intent was to create a “cascading” effect from the main interior spaces of the upper main floor, down to the rear yard. With a half-story descend down a new set of switch back stairs, the main living space engages a raised exterior deck as an interstitial level, before descending further down to a grade level terrace which engages some of the entertaining spaces on the lower floor. In the interior, a custom built white oak shelving/storage wall acts as a “spine” that continues down to the lower level. This “spine”, separates the public/living side of the main interior space from the private/bedroom side of the house.
